Elected : USSSA New York Hall Of Fame in 2014
Inducted : Match 2015, Islandia NY
Al joined the USSSA as an umpire with the Smithtown Umpires Association in 1979. He has served as a board member from 1989 to the present time. He also played in various leagues in the town from 1970 to 20065. AL's Physical Education degree from Brockport University, his Masters Degree from Pittsburgh, continuing education from Stonybrook University and his employment as a teacher in the Smithtown Schools has all aided his capabilities' in his endeavors. In 1992 Al along with Angelo Castellano, took over running the leagues for the Town of Smithtown. Together they have run the leagues to the present 2014 season.
In order to have success in running a softball program you must have the fulll support of your family and friends. Al's family is very involved. Barbara, his wife, does a lot of the computer work and during the busiest time of the season keeps Al nourished and on schedule. His son, Al Jr. gives ideas and input to some of the problems of running a league, as he followed his father's footsteps in Physical Education. Al's daughter, Claudia, also does computer work for the program and also a teacher is a resource for organization. Rick Marz, a former inductee to this Hall of Fame, has been a great mentor for Al, a real "go to" person. The family often quotes a saying, "it takes a village".
Program development and heads such as Ken Misa, the former Superintendent of Smithtown Recreation and Tom Mc Caffrey, the present head of Recreation, have been most supportive as have the entire staff at the Recreation Department of Smithtown.
As many of you already know success for a program of this nature requires the participation of many, hard work and uncountable hours devoted to making it happen. Al said, "he is extremely happy to be part of this program and takes pride in its continued success."
