In 1978 Jim joined the Brookhaven Officials Association of the USSSA as an umpire. In 1980, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Brookhaven Officials Association. In 1985, Jim was elected Vice President of the Association and in 1988 was elected President.
In 1989 Jim was appointed Brookhaven Director for USSSA. From 1989 to 1991 he served as President of the Brookhaven Officials Association and as a USSSA Brookhaven Director. From 1992 until present time he is still the USSSA Brookhaven Director and on the Board of the B.O.A. In 28 years of umpiring, Jim did more than 30 Local Tournaments, 10 State Tournaments and 4 National Tournaments. In 1984, Jim was honored to do the plate in the final game of the Class B World Championship. In 1995, he was assigned to umpire first base in the finals of the Class B National Tournament. He was honored to be selected Umpire of the Year for the Town of Brookhaven in 1984 and 1999. Jim was the first umpire to win this award twice.
As a player, Jim played in the USSSA for the past 30 years. In 19777, he played and managed Sonny's Chair, finishing in 5th place of the Class B Nationals. He again played in the 1978 USSSA World C Nationals which took place in Smithtown finishing 2nd. He has played for a number of teams including Sonny's, 112 Carpet, LI Trucking Parts and Mike's Place. With these teams he has participated in the USSSA at 22 National Tournaments and 10 State Tournaments. He has also participated in numerous local tournaments, as well as tournaments all over the Country.
Jim still is involved in softball with the senior and adult division of the USSSA in the Town of Brookhaven as a director and umpire.
