Inducted : March 2007, Rochester, NY
Laura's softball/baseball career began in 1974 when she began playing baseball in the Terryville/Port Jefferson Youth Baseball Program. She became a catcher since none of the other girls wanted to play the position. From then on, both in high school and college, she was a catcher. She was a three sport varsity athlete at Mercy High School, Riverhead, New York and the captain of the Hofstra University Women's Softball team in 1983 and 1984, where she graduated in 1984 with a degree in accounting.
In 1981, while working part-time for the Brookhaven Town Recreation Department, she founded the Hawkins & Spence Women's Softball team. Today, after 25 seasons and 15 League Championships, Laura still plays and is the manager. In 1990, Hawkins & Spence won the NYS Class 'C' USSSA Women's Championship, in Newburgh, NY, with Laura as their second baseman. The team has played in many NYS USSSA Tournaments, with Laura spending numerous hours trying to round-up her teams' players and make sure they had enough to field a team, and arrange transportation and hotels for the team members.
Although Laura does not know her statistics for the past twenty five year of playing slow pitch, interscholastic and collegiate softball, her fondest memories are of winning the NYS USSSA Championship, league championships and thrilling play-off wins. Laura is an accountant and lives in Middle Island, New York with her husband.
