James Nugent

Jim began his love of sports in the Bronx, New York. After high school, Jim entered the United
States Army. He served overseas in Southeast Asia and played various sports while serving his
country.
When Jim returned to civilian life, he began his softball career. He played in the Central Park
League in 1967 – 1968 with many famous entertainers and sports legends.
Jim moved to Brookhaven Town in 1969. He played and umpired softball in State, Regional, and
National Tournaments. He joined the USSSA/Brookhaven Officials Association (BOA) and has
served as the Brookhaven Director for over forty-six years. Jim played on nationally ranked
teams in major tournaments throughout the United States during the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
In 2006, Jim was inducted into the NYS USSSA Hall of Fame in the Executive category.
Jim began playing senior softball in 1993. He played with the New York Statesmen and the
Jersey Jaguars from 1995 to 2004. Jim has played senior softball into his 80s. He was inducted
into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame (NSSHOF) in 2021 in the player category with
fellow inductee and teammate Kevin Naylor.
Jim has played on six world championship teams during his senior years. He has earned sixteen
All Tournament awards while playing senior softball.
Jim plays Senior Softball in the town of Brookhaven’s Senior Softball program to this day.
Today, Jim and his wife Barb live in Centereach, New York.
