Phillip "Flip" McGovern

Phil (Flip) McGovern is a retired NYPD Detective. Flip started playing softball with NY Metro
in 1982. He was a 1st baseman and a pitcher. While playing with Metro, he contributed to the
team winning over 75 championships, including 7 World and 8 Police National Championships.
Flip was inducted into the Police Softball Hall of Fame as a charter member in 2006. He
continued playing on the Police Softball circuit and with the NYPD Blues. While doing so, he
also played for several other New York teams including Giant Steel, Fellingham’s, Line 2 Line,
Dutch Girl and Benchwarmer/Silver Streaks. Many Championships were won in the Brookhaven
Leagues playing with Fellingham's Giant Steel and Silver Streaks.
 
While playing softball, Flip has been awarded numerous honors including; All tournament, Gold
Glove, MVP, and Dayton National Sportsmanship Award.
 
Today he is a proud Pop to 10 grandchildren, his 4 children, and spouses. He enjoys spending
time with his wife Debbie, hunting and fishing at his upstate ranch as well as taking cruises. He
would like to thank his wife for her support and patience while she raised their kids and he
traveled to tournaments. He is hoping to get back on a softball field soon.
