Rich graduated from Byron-Bergen High School where he was an all-county athlete in soccer, basketball and baseball. In 2009 he was inducted into the Byron-Bergen Sports Hall of Fame. A scholar-athlete at Hobart College, Rich competed in there sports being named to the all-conference teams in basketball and baseball, and setting an RBI record in baseball. In basketball, Rich set the single season scoring record and scored more that 1,300 career points. He was also a member of the team which won basketball championships in the Empire Senior Games in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2007 his team finished second nationally.
Rich started his softball career playing in Batavia playing with the Casino Team before joining the Rochester Zeniths. He also played with Superstar Sports, TJ's and finally Pace. Rich was been named to the NSA All World team in 1987 and holds several MVP titles including A-AA tournaments in Sterling Heights, MI, Springfield, OH and Canton, MI. Rich was also named MVP in 1992 when Pace/Worth shocked the softball world by winning the Steele's Major USSSA tournament in Cleveland, defeating Steele's in the finals. Being on the mound for each game, Rich hit .731 for the weekend. Playing with Pace's Black American Team, Rich was MVP in a NIT tournament championship in Louisville, KY.
Rich retired from softball in 1994 and returned to baseball playing in the Men's Senior Baseball League. He was a member of the Long Island Mets, winning two national championships in 2000 and 2002. Rich is currently the hitting coach for Genesee Community College baseball team.
