Dietmar started playing softball in 1962 at the age of 18, playing outfield for the Floral Park Cardinals ASA League in Nassau County. When his manager got married in 1963 he took over and managed the team for eight years, securing three championships along the way.
Upon moving to Brookhaven in 1972, he played and managed the Cardinals for the next 46 years. Playing in the USSA Sunday League, the Open Night League, the Over 40 Night League and now finally the Senior League, which for the last 9 years Dietmar has been president. Under his management, he and his team won 10 championships. Of course he had a few last place finishes as well. Win or lose, Dietmar and his team stayed together and friendships were formed. In fact, he has 4 players that have been on his team for over 30 years.
Around 2014 Dietmar took over the Snowflake League from the Town of Brookhaven which consists of seven teams playing from September to November. This is a continuation of fun without the pressure to win.
Dietmar has come to realize that in the last 15 years winning and losing games is not as important as actually playing the game itself. It is about friendship, camaraderie and having fun. He believes his success as a manager is a simple one. Keep a short roster of 14 to 15 players who can play multiple positions. This way you can sub and rotate the line up and the playing field. This adds longevity to your team and every player is happy and engaged.
