Ray began hi career in Port Jefferson High School, New York. He was a 3 sport athlete while in high school. While playing basketball, football and baseball he was learning many valuable lessons about team sports that would enable him to become so successful in managing softball. His fifty years in softball have touched thousands of lives.

Ray played fast-pitch softball from 1957 to 1965 in the Brookhaven and Huntington leagues. He began his slow-pitch softball career in the Town of Brookhaven in 1965. He remains the longest continuous player/manager in the Town of Brookhaven's Softball Program history. His forty-two years of slow-pitch softball include play in open leagues, over forty leagues, and over sixty leagues. His teams have captured more league, playoff and tournament titles than any other person in Brookhaven Town Softball.

Ray played in the Northern Brookhaven League for numerous years and also became the League President for a period of ten years. The Mount Sinai Wheel Alignment softball team was coached by Ray in the 1960's and 1970's. His softball career then moved to the over-40 leagues in 199. His over-40 team captured fifteen consecutive league championships from 1991 to 2006.During that period his team had an undefeated season in 1998 going 43-0. His over-40 team captured the New York State USSSA Masters Championship in 1990, 1991, 1996, 1997, and 1998.

The town of Brookhaven's Men's Sixty and Over League was Ray's next destination. From 1998 to 2007 he has been a player/manager for the SilverStreaks softball team. During the 2006 season his team captured the Long Island Senior Softball Association's Class 'A' Championship. He played with the New York Statesmen over-60 team in 2001 and captured the World Championship in Manassas, Virginia. In 2002 he made the All World Team at Plano Texas while playing in the Softball Players Association's North American Championship Tournament.

Ray coached baseball at Suffolk County Community College in 1994 and 1995. He was a varsity baseball coach at Port Jefferson High School from1996 to 2000. For five years in the 1980's Ray coached Suffolk County PAL baseball teams. The Village of Port Jefferson's Youth Program had Ray's expertise for sever years also.

Ray Burr is the type of player/coach that others constantly point to as a role model for other to emulate. His dedication to the USSSA and his players is legendary.
