Giant Steel began playing USSSA league play in the mid 1990’s in Smithtown and Huntington
under the name Branch Auto. The team was comprised of former college and high school
baseball players and was competitive enough to quickly work its way up to the top leagues
giving teams like Gasoline Heaven and Shubert’s Auto Body some competition in league play.
Giant Industrial, a business incorporated in 1996, began sponsoring the team that became known
as Giant Steel that same year. Giant Steel’s tournament roots began with local tournaments and
later qualifying for the Triple Crown National Series in 1996 which led to years of play in Las
Vegas, Colorado and Florida. Some of the teams many accomplishments include:
-2000 Triple Crown Fall National Championship
-2002 Class A USSSA Belmar NJ Champs
-2002 – 2—3 Somerville NJ Class A Champs

Hargrove, and Flip McGovern play integral roles in the team’s success and is looking forward to
adding several more in the near future! Current professional softball player Neil Haglund also
played early in his career for Giant Steel.
