Elected : USSSA New York Hall Of Fame in 2008
Inducted : March 2009, Islandia, NY
Tom was introduced to the USSSA Umpires Association in 1977 by the late Dick Stauss, who was then the President of CNY Umpire Association. Dick had seen Tom play ball at a local Jaycees picnic, and thought his ball skills would help him become a good umpire.
Tom played hardball for many years. He won several awards and trophies, and was inducted into the Split Rock Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. After baseball, Tom played both fast pitch and slow pitch softball. Before long he was umping on days he wasn't playing ball. In 1995 injuries put an end to Tom's playing career. It was at this point that umpiring became his priority. Tom soon became involved in tournaments. He started with League and Local Finals, then State and Regional Tournaments. Tom also umpired in several World Series of Softball Tournaments in Orlando, Florida. He has served several terms on the Board of Directors for Central NY Umpires Association. His love for umpiring also finds him doing USSSA approved volunteering for Make A Wish and other local charities.
Tom had a 38 year career selling Personal Lines Insurance for Allstate. He achieved many awards and earned several trips while with Allstate. His most memorable were to New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Hilton Head and the Bahamas.
Tom has spent the past 3 years volunteering his time with the Red Cross Blood Services. He received two prestigious awards for his professionalism and dedication to the Red Cross Blood Collection Cause. Tom also enjoys working at Syracuse University sporting events, and cheering for the Yankees.
Tom contributes his success as an umpire to the support and understanding of his wife Kathie, who spends her summers with him at the ball parks.
